Creating Your First Email Test on SpamBarometer

Testing your emails before sending them to your subscribers is essential to ensure good deliverability. This guide will walk you through creating your first test on SpamBarometer.

Step 1: Log in to your account

Navigate to SpamBarometer.com and log in with your credentials. If you don't have an account yet, you'll need to sign up first.

Step 2: Navigate to the Test Creation page

Once logged in, click on the "New Test" button in the dashboard or navigate to the "Tests" section and click "Create New Test".

Step 3: Choose your test method

SpamBarometer offers multiple ways to test your email:

  • Paste HTML: Copy and paste your email HTML directly
  • Upload File: Upload an HTML or EML file
  • Forward Email: Forward an existing email to our special testing address
  • API Submission: Use our API to programmatically test emails

For your first test, we recommend using the "Paste HTML" method as it's the simplest.

Step 4: Enter your email content

If you selected "Paste HTML", paste your email HTML into the editor. Make sure to include both the HTML and any embedded CSS. If you're testing a plain text email, use the "Plain Text" tab.

Step 5: Add email headers (optional)

You can add custom email headers to test how they affect your spam score. Common headers to test include:

  • From
  • Reply-To
  • Subject
  • List-Unsubscribe

Step 6: Run the test

Click the "Run Test" button to submit your email for analysis. The system will process your email and generate a comprehensive spam report.

Step 7: Review your results

Once the test is complete, you'll see your overall spam score along with detailed feedback about potential issues. The report is divided into several sections:

  • Overall Score: A numerical score indicating spam likelihood
  • Content Analysis: Issues related to your email content
  • Technical Analysis: Technical issues like headers and authentication
  • Recommendations: Specific suggestions to improve deliverability

Step 8: Make improvements

Based on the feedback, make changes to your email to address the identified issues. Common improvements include:

  • Reducing spammy language
  • Balancing image-to-text ratio
  • Adding proper unsubscribe links
  • Fixing HTML structure

Step 9: Re-test your email

After making changes, run another test to see if your spam score has improved. Continue this process until you achieve a satisfactory score.
